WIVES OF CUBAN POLITICAL PRISONERS DENOUNCE GOVERNMENT MANIPULATION

 HAVANA, July 21, 2004 – Dolia Leal Francisco, wife of Cuban political prisoner Nelson Aguiar Ramirez, is denouncing the government’s attempts to manipulate her and other political prisoners’ wives and mothers of the group known as the “Ladies in White” (Damas de Blanco) to keep them from campaigning for the liberation of their loved ones.
 
 “After 16 months without any telephone communication, the military command at the Provincial Prison of Guantanamo determined that the call with my husband would be every Sunday at 10 a.m., but every Sunday at that time I go to the Church of St. Rita. It is my obligation and my duty to go and to walk down Fifth Avenue with the wives dressed in white and call for the liberation of all political prisoners, because they are innocent,” said Leal in a telephone conversation with the Cuban Democratic Directorate
 (“Directorio”).
 
 According to Leal, her husband, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison during the crackdown in March 2003 on the island’s democratic opposition, is incarcerated at the Provincial Prison of Guantanamo, on the opposite end of the island, hundreds of miles away from his home in Havana, and is currently being kept in an isolation cell. Until now, prison authorities have refused medical assistance for his hypoglycemia and orthopedic problems.
 
 “On Sunday, July 11, I waited for Nelson’s first call and he told me, ‘Dolia, go to church. Run to church, because this is just another government maneuver and we are not going to let them keep you from going to church. Tell the world that this is just another way for them to take you out of circulation.’ As a result, they are not letting me speak to Nelson,” said Leal.
 
 Laura Pollan, wife of political prisoner Hector Maseda Gutierrez, told the Directorio that she was called from the prison La Pendiente in Villa Clara, where her husband is being kept, about changing their calls to Sunday morning.
 
 “During the call, someone did my husband the favor of telling me that State Security officer Yaikel was telling him [Hector] that our calls should be Sunday morning instead of Wednesday. They are doing this to try to keep me from going to church. But my husband asked someone to tell me to continue life as usual, to continue doing what I had been doing for the good of the family. When he says ‘the family,’ he means the 75 prisoners, and he told me to continue denouncing the situation to all the international organizations. I think it is completely unfair that they are trying to keep me from attending,” she said.
 
 Pollan also said that on important dates such as March 18th (the anniversary of the crackdown) and Father’s Day, many women were put in the painful position of having to choose between seeing their loved ones or participating in protests or acts to call for a general amnesty.

DENUNCIAN DESDE CUBA MANIPULACION CONTRA ESPOSAS DE PRISIONEROS POLITICOS

LA HABANA, 21 de julio de 2004 – Dolia Leal Francisco, esposa del prisionero político Nelson Aguiar Ramírez, denunció este martes la manipulación a la que está sometida junto a las esposas y madres de los prisioneros políticos conocidas como las “damas de blanco” para que no participe en las actividades por la libertad de los prisioneros políticos cubanos.

“Después de 16 meses sin comunicación telefónica el alto mando de los militares en la prisión provincial de Guantánamo determinó que la llamada con mi esposo sería todos los domingos a las 10:00 am, pero yo todos los domingos voy a la iglesia de Santa Rita, en ese mismo horario yo tengo que estar en la iglesia de Santa Rita, y es mi obligación y es mi deber caminar por Quinta Avenida con las esposas vestidas de blanco y pedir la libertad de todos los presos políticos porque son inocentes”, expresó en llamada telefónica con el Directorio Democrático Cubano.

De acuerdo a Dolia su esposo, quien se encuentra sancionado a 13 años de prisión y los cumple en la Prisión Provincial de Guantánamo, a más de 1000 kilómetros de su lugar de residencia, se encuentra en celda de aislamiento desde su reclusión en ese penal luego de ser sancionado en abril de 2003, y hasta estos momentos se le ha negado asistencia médica para sus padecimientos de hipoglicemia y problemas ortopédicos.

“El domingo 11 de julio esperé la primera llamada de Nelson y me dijo: ‘Dolia, vete para la iglesia, corre para la iglesia pues esto es otra maniobra del gobierno y no vamos a permitir que te saquen de la iglesia. Denuncia ante el mundo una forma más de sacarte de circulación’, por lo tanto no me están dando la llamada de Nelson”, afirmó Dolia Leal.

Laura Pollán, esposa del prisionero político Héctor Maseda Gutiérrez, dijo al Directorio que a ella la habían llamado con un mensaje desde la prisión La Pendiente en Villa Clara, donde se encuentra su esposo, acerca de cambiar las llamadas a los  domingos en la mañana.

“En la llamada una persona le hizo el favor a mi esposo de avisarme que el oficial de la Seguridad del EstadoYaikel le planteaba que las llamadas en vez de los miércoles iban a ser los domingos en la mañana. Ellos lo hacen con el objetivo de que ya yo no vaya a la iglesia. Pero mi esposo me mandó a decir que continuara mi vida normal, que hiciera lo que hasta ahora yo había hecho por el bien de la familia, cuando él me habla de la familia se refiere a los 75, y que lo denuncie a todas las instancias internacionales. Me parece que es algo muy arbitrario que ellos quieran hacer que yo no asista,” afirmó.

Pollán dijo además que otras esposas y madres han sido víctimas de manipulaciones similares el 18 de marzo y el día de los padres, poniendo a estas mujeres en la dolorosa posición de tener que escoger entre ver a su ser querido o participar en estas actividades por una amnistía general.
